    Mem1 - +1 - [Music]

"Mem1 seamlessly blends the sounds of cello and electronics to create a limitless palette of sonic possibilities. In their improvisation-based performances, Mark and Laura Cetilia's use of custom hardware and software, in conjunction with a uniquely subtle approach to cello technique, result in the creation of a single voice rather than a duet between two individuals. Their music moves beyond melody, lyricism and traditional structural confines, revealing an organic evolution of sound that has been called "a perfect blend of harmony and cacophony" (Forced Exposure)."

‘… unlike trees or their roots, the rhizome connects any point to any other point, and its traits are not necessarily linked to traits of the same nature; it brings into play very different regimes of signs, and even non-sign states. The rhizome is reducible neither to the one not the multiple. It is not the One that becomes Two or even directly three, four, five…’ [Deleuze & Guattari (1980): A Thousand Plateaus]

+1, Interval Recordings' second release by Los Angeles-based electroacoustic duo Mem1 (Mark + Laura Cetilia), introduces listeners to a series of collaborations between the duo and nine guest artists: Jan Jelinek, Ido Govrin, Area C, RS-232, Frank Bretschneider, Kadet Kuhne, Jen Boyd, Jeremy Drake, and Steve Roden. Whether the collaborations took place in an old cabin by the lake, on a hot and hazy day in a painter's studio, or floating through the infinite void of virtual space, the resulting works act as transportive vessels. Removing us from our surroundings, they deliver us to a place that cannot exist in our daily lives, a transformative space in which impossible realities collide and time ceases to exist. Comprised of lush tapestries, fuzzy dissonances, echoed rhythms and waves of electronic wash, +1 is electroacoustic chamber music for the twenty-first century. Interval

  • Licht und Schatten is the new venture from Germany's Field Rotation, and also the prelude to his main album due for release on Fluid Audio in 2010.

Field Rotation was founded in 2008 by the electronic music composer and producer Christoph Berg in Kiel, northern Germany.

Experimenting with electronic and classical elements this project combines floating soundscapes with electroacoustic colours to create minimalistic soundtracks renouncing of visualisation, but interacting with the listeners emotions and feelings. As a violinist and pianist Christoph combines the synthetic sound engineering with natural sounds to communicate his short acoustic tales and impressions.

FACT mix 111: Redshape - [Music]

The final FACT Mix of 2009 is by techno’s favourite masked crusader: Redshape.

Redshape’s identity was unknown when his first 12″, ‘2084′/’ULTRA’, dropped on Music Man Records in 2006, but he’s since “come out” – revealing himself to be a German producer by the name of Sebastian Kramer. A series of killer EPs and singles followed for discerning labels like Delsin, Styrax Leaves, Millions of Moments and Kramer’s own Present, yielding classic tracks like ‘Dog Days’ and ‘Blood Into Dust’.

The Redshape sound is a subtle extrapolation of Detroit techno, and as a producer and live performer Kramer conjures great intensity out of moody, nuanced grooves, stirring dancefloors to rapture without recourse to dumb riffs and unearned kickdrum-pounding. His music sounds as hypnotic and powerful at home as it does in clubs, and his recently released debut album, The Dance Paradox, seals his reputation – being an elegantly crafted suite that pays tribute to classic techno while subtly redefining it for the 21 century.

Redshape’s FACT Mix is a live set recently recorded in Berlin, and is virtually a “greatest hits” selection, albeit one rendered with a sense of mischief and improvisation.

    Studio 1 - Studio 1 - [Music]

One of Cologne artist Wolfgang Voigt's most celebrated aliases, Studio 1 is not so much a title but rather a series of ten influential records. Beginning with the Green record in 1995, Voigt began releasing one Studio 1 record after another, with each untitled record bearing only a different color to differentiate it from its predecessor. The records featured a unique style of ultra-minimal techno, characterized by a palette of bouncy beats at varying frequencies, intricately arranged into a spacious yet complex multi-layered rhythm.

  • This is Berlin-based Paul Kalkbrenner's fourth full-length CD on the BPitch Control label, featuring re-workings of his earlier 12" tracks by Wighnomy Brothers, Sascha Funke, Agoria, Ellen Allien & Apparat, Joris Voorn, Alexander Kowalski, Modeselektor and Michael Mayer. ReWorks is a very special project that Paul has been planning for a long time. He asked some of his friends, whom he also very much appreciates musically, for remixes. Paul opened his treasure box so everyone could pick the track he/she likes most and play around with it. The result is a wonderful remix album that not only gives a new touch to some of Kalkbrenner's greatest tracks, but was fun work for the experienced remixers. Wighnomy Brothers introduce us to the record smoothly, but in an exciting way. They crafted their version of "Steinbeisser" without any beats and only concentrated on pure sound. Sascha Funke's "Miles Away" gets down to business right away -- striking beats and a sing-along melody of a reverb synth that, towards the end, builds up to an upbeat peak. The first half of Agoria's remix of "Page 1, 2, 3" is a beat that lays itself upon you hypnotically, and the second half shows off with a great accordion line from the original. The wake-up call comes from Ellen Allien & Apparat. First melodic, swinging beats jump around happily, then break, facet and beat again, in unison with the melody. Joris Voorn's version of "Press On" is a blend of thrilling anticipation and impatience. Alexander Kowalski focuses on a straight and pushing beat of a dry bass drum with a nice reverbed vocal sample. Modeselektor sound like a techno marching band with their version of "Gia 2000," and Michael Mayer is the whispering fade-out. One chord only is enough to set free all those happy happy-hormones that make you dance to the stereo and start this CD all over again!

  • Carlo Van de Roer was born in 1975 on a hill in Wellington, New Zealand. He studied photography at Victoria University then left New Zealand in 1999. Van de Roer got lost in Central America and various other corners of the world before finally landing in New York, where he now lives and works.

He has exhibited work with Mehr Gallery, Petra Projects, NY ADC and Jen Bekman Gallery in New York, Arena1 in California and MUSAC Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art in Leon. Van de Roer is a recipient of the ADC Young Guns Award, APA Silver to Pixels Award for Fine Art and the PDN PIX Award. He was a 2007 Hot Shot and named among the Photolucida Top 50 Photographers.

The series is entitled Orbs and it consists of multiple photographs with a slight touch of digital manipulation, specifically a singular perfect circle rests atop each image.

What gives each photograph its allure and mystique is the interaction between the figures and the flatly-colored orb. The figures react in different ways to the intrusion - astonishment, reverence or even ambivalence.

  • APOTHEOSIS -
16mm film, color, sound, 18-1/2 minutes
Directed & produced by John Lennon & Yoko Ono

"The film was made in winter, using a camera filming from a hot air balloon, and despite its apparent seamlessness, is edited in three parts.  The first part, lasting only a few seconds, shows the head and shoulders of Ono and Lennon in close-up, wrapped in coats and scarves, their mouths and noses muffled against the cold. Both stand silently in the square of a picturesque English village.
In the next, longer section, the camera draws upward away from the square, showing rooftops, an aerial view of cars, people, buildings, the local church, and, as the village recedes, a patchwork of fields covered in snow.
As the sounds of the village die away a silence ensues, intensifying proportionally as the balloon rises.  The silence is broken only by the distant barking of dogs far below, the occasional gunshot as someone hunting in the fields pursues his prey, and the sound of the hot air balloon's apparatus.  The white landscape recedes as the balloon gently drifts further and further upward, until there is complete silence.
In the third and final section, the balloon ascends into white clouds and the screen remains white for several minutes until the balloon re-emerges above the clouds, where the blue sky and winter sun can suddenly be seen.  The journey ends with this dramatic, sublime image of a clear blue sky. With a daring hellride of a plot The Death of Bunny Munro is also a modern morality tale of sorts, a stylish, furious, funny, truthful and tender account of one man's descent and judgement.

Fabio Viale - Ahgalla - [Art]

Fabio Viale is a young Italian Sculptor who is based in Turin, Italy.  From one aspect he is the traditional sculptor who uses marble to create his sculptures, on the other hand though, these sculptures are no ordinary sculptures.  Who ever thought that marble would offer such opportunities in creating these distinct contemporary pieces that speak the language of today with the know-how of yesterday?

For those who are acquainted with the procedure of working with marble, they surely know that this material is not easy to handle as it requires both mental and physical efforts by the artist from the minute that the idea is conceived to its realization.  Despite its difficulty in handling there is a translucency in the material that gives any marble sculpture a visual depth beyond its surface and this evokes a certain realism in the works created.  This is the case with Fabio Viale as his works do not seem to be created from bulky marble but rather seem like they have been created by lightweight styrofoam.

    Haus Rucker Co - [Art]

Haus-Rucker-Co was an Austrian architect and artist , worked mainly in the 70s and 80s  between art and architecture, sculptures, installations in public spaces .

In 1968 Haus Rucker Co created this device consisting of a pulsating bubble inside a large inflatable capsule, which was supported by a waist-high metal frame. At its core was a bed with ample room for two people to recline and take it easy. A repeat pattern of inflation and deflation created a soft, pulsating rhythm, to which the inhabitants were supposed to adapt and relax.

Other devices included a collection of bizarre helmets with colored visors, flashing lights and stereo headphones. These plastic headpieces, with the names 'Flyhead', 'Viewatomizer', 'Drizzler' and 'Environment Transformer' (all 1968), were said to isolate the wearer from the outside world. The helmets placed a buffer between the real world and the senses of the person inside.

  • Tsugi Podcast 106 : The Black Dog

and Design. After moving to New York, she became printing assistant
for George Tice. Awards include a Fulbright Grant, as well as “Curator’s
Choice” at the Houston Center of Photography Membership Exhibition
and the “Top 50 Photographers” chosen by Critical Mass. She has
been an Artist-in-Residence at Light Work, and was recently selected

Snowbound has been exhibited internationally in Argentina, Syria,

collections as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Museum of
    Photographic Arts, San Diego; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art;
and Fidelity Investments. Lisa M. Robinson was recently nominated
for a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant.

For five winters, the young American photographer Lisa M. Robinson
made photographs in the snow. Snowbound depicts landscapes in which
everyday objects - alienated and sunken in snow- civilize the natural
surroundings. Traces of human existence set accents in the white
landscape, delimiting it and often popping up in an amusing or
incongruous way. A lonely hammock, a trampoline or a swimming pool
are echoes of both summers past and of personal memories. But
Lisa M. Robinson is not interested in showing the obvious; instead,
the photographs make use of the many aggregate states of water -
ice, snow, fog, water - as metaphors for life and transience.

  • "he internationally revered techno superstars Underworld pay tribute to their art-school roots on their new compilation album, Athens. The first in a series, this rich musical mix is packed with rare grooves and cult gems from the outer limits of dance music, jazz-rock, fusion and progressive pop. This album shows the open-minded flipside of Underworld, the more eclectic and experimental foundations that lie beneath their shimmering electro soundscapes. The album is credited to Underworld vs The Misterons, a collective alter ego which includes the group’s core members Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, their regular studio and live collaborator Darren Price, plus creative mastermind Steven Hall. Ranging far and wide across musical genres and eras, this music will appeal equally to vinyl-loving connoisseurs and arty party hedonists. The grooves are still funky, but the vibes are warm and soulful, with more live instruments than sequencers or drum machines."

  • New York hip hop producer Tony Simon aka Blockhead returns with his third and best instrumental album for Ninja Tune.

Blockhead has long made beautiful, emotive music based around the hip hop template, but on “The Music Scene” he elevates his craft to another level. Tony puts it down to the use of Ableton, which means that rather than working from “one basic beat and building off it” (the standard hip hop model), he has begun stringing together multiple beats and weaving them together into increasingly complex, surprising and satisfying pieces of music. As he himself puts it, “I made each song a little more of a musical journey than anything I have ever done before.”

Blockhead’s ambition to “tell stories without words” is evident from opener “It’s Raining Clouds” onwards. The tune starts off as classic downtempo and ends up almost drum and bass, the music having changed and fallen away, echoing back through itself and feeding into previous themes at least three times. It’s an epic in an album of epics.

At the heart of the record is the remarkable “The Daily Routine” – an exploration of drug addiction (based around a found recording of drug addicts arguing), Blockhead says “it’s pretty much the creepiest song I’ve ever made.” “Four Walls,” meanwhile aims a musical broadside at the current vogue for autotune. “Which One Of You Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer” is huge ambient space rock hip hop. “The Prettiest Seaslug” is Bahia-beat on opium. “Tricky Turtle” begins as afro-blaxpoitation, turns into a voodoo orgy and ends somewherte in the Middle East. “Farewell Spaceman” starts off sounding like an outtake from “Bewitched” and ends as an ecstatic, chugging flight off into the stars.

While “The Music Scene” represents a development in Blockhead’s work, he still holds true to his basic beliefs about music and rhythm. When not working on his new album he has been providing production for Aesop Rock, DJ Signify, Joanna Erdos and many more, plus remixes for Yameen and Chin Chin, amonst others. Whereas the music scene is “a bastardized version of something that was already watered down,” Blockhead’s “The Music Scene,” like his career as a whole, is “the opposite of that.” By re-working, chopping and melding samples, by blending them together, Blockhead restores rather than dilutes their purity.
